Know Your Resin

The performance of a water softener or any water treatment device utilizing ion exchange resins can be assessed by measuring exchange capacity, moisture content, iron fouling, and physical composition. Specific elements can also be tested for upon request. Testing your resin is the best way to determine whether it is time to replace your resin or get a new water softener.

Strong Acid Cation resin is typically used for removing hardness. These types of resins can also be used to remove other cations like iron.


Strong Base Anion resins are typically used to exchange anions like nitrate, sulfate, chloride, nitrite, fluoride, and bicarbonate.


Mixed Bed Resin is a combination of cation and anion resin. The resins are typically used to produce deionized water or remove specific combinations of contaminants.
